The 5-meter rocky oarfish caught off the coast of Taiwan

Giant ‘earthquake fish’ was captured after 2 earthquakes in eastern Taiwan

The 5 meter long oarfish was caught off the east coast of Taiwan after two earthquakes in eastern Taiwan.

Taiwanese fishermen on Friday (November 6) caught a giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) nearly 5 meters long off the east coast of Taiwan the same day two earthquakes struck the area.

The oarfish is 490 cm long and weighs about 45 kg. It is caught off the coast of Dong’ao in Yilan district.

The owner of Fumei Huo Seafood Restaurant (富 美 活 海鮮 mua) bought the fish for NT $ 16,000 ($ 560). Chen Kuo-pin (陳國濱) was quoted by Liberty Times as saying it was the longest “earthquake fish” (地震 魚) he had ever seen.

Oarfish are called “earthquake fish” in Taiwan because according to local legend, they emerge from the abyss just before a major earthquake. Chen says a kilogram of fish meat can be sold for NT $ 400, “softer than tofu” and suitable for steaming.

Chen said fishing nets are usually made from early morning to late evening. He speculated that the leviathan might have been caught late at night.

He said the fishermen confirmed it was still alive when they landed. However, as it is a deep sea fish, it cannot last long in the tank.

Chen claims that it is the largest fish of its kind ever caught in the Yilan area. Many local fishermen have corroborated his claim.

Chen has been running his seafood restaurant for 55 years. The clients were amazed at the size of the marine life.

At 2:36 am Friday morning, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck 30.3 km southeast of Taitung Town Hall at a focal depth 25.3 km, according to data from Central Weather Bureau. On the same day at 9:40 am, a magnitude 5.4 of magnitude struck 107.8 km northeast of Taitung Town Hall at a central depth of 29 km.

When asked if he believes the fish emerged because of the earthquake that occurred that day, Chen replied that “it is something for the experts to clarify.”

Chen then explained that many oarfish are caught annually in Yilan but they are usually around 100 to 200 cm long. “Nearly five meters is very rare.”

This type of meat is usually sold from NT $ 300 to NT $ 400 / kg, and can be scooped up after being steamed, he said.
